Created by Blaine Horlocker, the strum stick is his variation on an instrument whose roots run deep in Smoky Mountain music lore. Blaine's version has a large body that produces a compelling, full sound. Yet this is one of the easiest of all instruments to play. Simply place your finger on the noting string [bottom string] then strum all 3 strings and you will get a sweet sound. The mountain dulcimer and the strum stick both have the same noting and numbering system. The strum stick has a diatonic scale, the do-re-mi that we all learned in grade school, with all the notes on one string. There are 6 1/2 frets for sharps or flats. 35 inches long in total, with a body that is 14 inches long and 6 inches wide. The neck is made from hard wood, which is noted for its strength and stability. The back is crafted from poplar, the front from red cedar or pecan. All wood comes from the Great Smoky Mountains. 3 strings, with 3 geared guitar tuners makes for very easy tuning. Price with red cedar front is $130; price with pecan front is $150.
